Better hearing

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT THE APPOINTMENT?

The appointment shouldn't take longer than 45 minutes.
We will talk you through the microsuction procedure and take a history about your ear health. The practitioner will then examine your ear canals with an otoscope.
If deemed appropriate, the earwax will be removed, and aftercare advice given.
Please note, if there is no wax to be removed, a fee of £25 will be payable for the assessment and call out.

HOW OFTEN WILL I NEED EARWAX REMOVAL?

Every client is different. Sometimes one procedure can last many years, for others, it can be required every six months. Some people are more prone earwax build up, and people will suffer with differing symptoms.
Wax Out Wiltshire will always be happy to offer advice. Alternatively, your GP service will be able to advise the best course of action if you have ongoing issues, unrelated to earwax.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MICROSUCTION?

The procedure tends to be quicker and more comfortable than other forms of earwax removal. The use of a powerful microscope, allows more wax and debris to be removed, more precisely.
One of the main benefits of microsuction is the improvement in hearing (though this will only be as good as your hearing was before the build up of earwax), and the relief of other associated symptoms of wax blockage, such as itching, pain, tinnitus and vertigo.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MICROSUCTION AND EAR SYRINGING?

Ear syringing, or irrigation, is another method of removing earwax. Water is pushed into the ear canal, flushing out the earwax. There are risks associated with this method, such as ear infections or impacted earwax as the ear drum cannot be visualised.
During the microsuction procedure, the ear canal remains visible throughout,  using magnification loupes which gives the practitioner a clear view of the whole canal, the ear drum and the wax inside. The wax can be removed precisely and thoroughly.

DOES MICROSUCTION HURT?

Microsuction shouldn't be painful. You may feel a little discomfort if your ears are very sensitive, and it can be a strange sensation having the wax removed and it is noisy. Some people may feel dizzy after the procedure, this is only temporary and usually resolves within a minute ot two.
You will be fully assessed and observed before the practitioner leaves the appointment.

WHAT SHOULD I DO BEFORE MY APPOINTMENT?

When booking your appointment, the practitioner may ask you to use some ear drops or spray, such as Earol in order to soften the earwax. This helps to make the procedure as effective and comfortable as possible.
The following link shows how to correctly self administer ear drops- sometimes a tricky feat in children and adults alike!

AFTERCARE

Remember that earwax is natural protection for your ears. As long as it isn't causing discomfort or reduced hearing, it is ok to be there!

Do not be tempted to poke anything- even cotton buds, in to your ears- this will only push the wax deeper and possibly cause trauma to your ear.

In order to prevent build-up of excess wax, if this is a regular problem for you, it may be helpful to put 1-2 drops/ spray of olive oil in your ears once or twice a week, in order to keep the wax soft, and encourage it's natural removal.
